Sir Kyffin Paintings Fetch £30k

Affinity An oil painting by the late Welsh artist Sir Kyffin Williams has fetched twice its estimated value at auction.

Welsh Farm was bought by a woman from the Llyn peninsula for £26,000, while a smaller watercolour by the artist went under the hammer for £4,400.
A Welsh Farm has been bought by a woman from the Llyn Peninsular.
The paintings were discovered in Welshpool, Powys, last year along with a drawing by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, which sold for £2,100.

The works were part of a sale by Shropshire-based auction house Halls.

The company said the price paid for the oil painting and the watercolour, which was about the same farm, had exceeded expectations.

"We anticipated keen interest in Sir Kyffin's painting and sketch due to the current popularity of his work and the fact that both were in good condition, but the prices achieved far exceeded our expectations," said William Lacey of Halls.

"The lady who bought the oil painting had travelled from the Llyn peninsula and had wanted one of his works for a long time."

The circular drawing signed Pugin and titled St Albans, shows a busy market square with people on horseback and a cathedral in the background.

Mr Lacey said although Pugin was best known for designing the interior of the Houses of Parliament in London, he was also a talented artist who drew more conventional subjects as well as architectural designs.

Sir Kyffin, from Anglesey, died at the age of 88 in 2006.

The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth was bequeathed much of his own art collection, running to hundreds of works.
