Affinity for Water (April 16, 2008) |
|
| |
What is the
reason for our indissoluble attraction to water? In all its forms, this
intrinsic essence of life on planet Earth compels us to search it out, drink
it in, envelope ourselves in it, capture the beauty of light upon liquid
surfaces, and unravel mysteries hidden beneath its depths. As an
artist,
I am particularly intrigued by the effect water has on mood. The sound can
be soothing or stirring. The movement can be relaxing or exciting. In my
two most recent paintings, I explore strikingly different attributes of
water and the contrasting emotions it evokes.
In “Autumn Reflections”, vibrant colors ripple reflectively on the gently
flowing stream. It creates a feeling of peace and calm contentment. Subtly,
the small waterfall disturbs the waters surface just enough to blend cool
lavender and blue of the sky with the warm reflections of Autumnal glory.
Stills pools collect fallen leaves, as our mind gathers memories of seasons
past. Time flows on as a river. Lives tumble over occasional rocks and
obstacles, only to learn that they fashion something beautiful in us as a
result .
Introspective and subdued, become lost in this meditative painting.
In “Coastal Cliffs and Ocean Swells”, the emphasis is on water’s unstoppable
power. The inevitable crashing wave at the end of the swell is implied, but
not the focus of this painting. Standing at the cliffs, where Land meets
Sea, where our world ends and the mystery begins, can be unsettling, even
fear inspiring. Thunderous sounds pound all around and the incessant motion
of the swells, quicken the pulse. Alive is how I feel, yet also
insignificant in the vast scheme of things. Late sun rays highlight the
solid, warm rocks contrasting it with the unpredictable, cold blue ocean.
The mood of the scene is as changeable as the sea itself: Wild, yet
compelling. Tumultuous, yet invigorating. Transported to times past as
explorer of hidden realms and worlds beyond the horizon, I hope to convey
the excitement of this Pacific coast moment.
