William John Leech (1881-1968), Irish


 

     William John Leech was reclusive in his lifetime, but his attractive landscapes, portraits and still-lifes, in oil and watercolour, have long been collected. This catalogue, of the 1996 exhibition by Denise Ferran, is the fruit of many years research and brings together over a hundred works. Leech was initially attracted by the tonal painting of Whistler, but, in Brittany, developed a vibrant post-modernist palette and distinctive brushwork which sustained him for a long career.
