Artist Biography
Conrad Wise Chapman (1842-1910),
American
Conrad
Wise Chapman, the son and pupil of painter John Gadsby Chapman,
established his professional reputation as a painter of Civil War scenes.
After the war, he lived for varying periods of time in Mexico, where he
painted numerous views of the Valley of Mexico, a subject that proved
popular throughout his career. In this painting, the snow-capped peaks of
Popocatepetl and Ixtaccihuatl rise in the distance above the Lake of
Texcoco. Beyond the herd of goats stands the tile factory of W. R. Jolly
of Manchester, England. This work is a later, smaller version of a
painting of the valley and tile factory that Jolly commissioned Chapman to
paint in 1865.
