Artist Biography
James
Archer (1823-1904), Scotish
Scottish
painter of genre, portraits, landscapes and historical scenes (mostly
medieval). Studied at the Trustee's Academy in
Edinburgh under Sir William
Allan. At first painted chalk portraits, but in 1849 he exhibited his first
historical picture 'The Last Supper' at the RSA. Elected ARSA 1850, RSA 1855.
Exhibited at the
Royal
Academy 1840-1904 (108
works), British Institution and Society of British Artists. About 1859 he began
to paint a series of Arthurian subjects, e.g. 'La Morte d'Arthur', 'Sir
Lancelot and Queen Guinevere' etc. which show Pre-Raphaelite influence. In 1862
he settled in London, and turned mainly
to sentimental historical scenes and portraits. He was the first Victorian
painter to do children's portraits in period costume.
