 Learn About Art

Form: Texture

The personal touch
The physical presence of art is part of its power, and texture enhances this presence. Almost all artwork has a tactile quality, including most original fine art prints. The thickness of the paint or the raised line of an etching reminds us that the work was created by hand, and invites our touch. The temptation to touch a lush surface can be so irresistible that many museums use red velvet ropes as a reminder that we should look, but not touch richly textured artworks.

An added dimension
Texture adds dimension not only to the surface of the work, but also to our emotional understanding of the work. Textures can make a work seem inviting and pleasant, or menacing and uncomfortable.
